Nurturing young black musicians in Soweto
Buskaid is a charitable music organisation based in Diepkloof, a suburb of the South African township of Soweto.
Our vision is that all children should be given the opportunity to channel their creative energies and enhance their academic abilities through the learning and playing of classical music.
Our mission is to offer string tuition of the highest international standards to local children from current and previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
Buskaid is also committed to creating employment opportunities for all its students, as performers, teachers, and stringed instrument repairers.

We are delighted to announce the date of our 2026 Annual Linder Concert.
The Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble will present a varied programme ranging from European classical to Buskaid’s very own brand of Afro Jazz and Kwela. The Buskaid Ensemble comprises some of the most versatile young string musicians in South Africa.
Renowned worldwide for their stylistic performances of classical music, they are also able to switch seamlessly into classic pop, improv and Afro Jazz. Tshidiso and Bongani Boikanyo (brothers) and Koketso & Tshegofatso Mphela (sisters) are cousins, and this year will feature as soloists in Mozart’s youthful Serenata Notturna, which also includes timpani (aka African drum!). The focal moment of the concert is Bruch’s poignant Kol Nidrei, featuring Koketso Mphela as cello soloist.
Buskaid always presents some of the world’s most beautiful – but less familiar – music to its very discerning Joburg audiences and this year is no exception! The music of Rameau, Brahms, Sibelius and Elgar will be followed by the musicians’ own take on Amapiano and Afropop, including songs by Mango Groove, Lira, Jonny Clegg and Freshly Ground.
